A Weekend Aboard the Belmond Grand Hibernian Train

For those keen to find a change of pace Belmond’s train journeys offer the opportunity to experience an old-school style of travel that is at once nostalgic and glamorous, personal and creative, and totally immersive.

In September, I set off on a two-night weekend jaunt through Ireland aboard the Grand Hibernian. The itinerary showed stops in some of Ireland’s most storied cities and villages, with chances to see the fabled countryside as we crisscrossed the country.

The trip began the moment I arrived at The Westbury Dublin, where a sharply dressed man whisked guests to a private bar for cappuccinos and Pellegrino before departure. Guests mingled and the occasional giggle was heard—I could feel excitement building. A short while later, our little group boarded a luxurious private coach and traveled to Dublin Euston Station to begin the journey.

We were greeted with bagpipes at Euston Station—our induction to Irish hospitality and music. The train shimmered a beautiful, shiny blue at the end of a row of dull, commuter trains. Wide-eyed, we stepped on board into what felt like an entirely new world.

Champagne was popped and we quickly settled in. The space was cozy and refined. Warm wooden details in the ceiling and comfy wool upholstery. The air smelled fresh. Michael Andrews, General Manager for Belmond’s Grand Hibernian and Royal Scotsman trains welcomed guests. “We have a lovely weekend ahead,” he said. “I promise you one thing—you will not go hungry this weekend.” I am here to confirm: he was not lying.

The train departed the station and the Irish countryside trundled by. A backdrop of verdant greens, sprawling pastures, horses and villages provided a beautiful setting as we dined together for the first time. Warm bread with butter to die for, little gem salads, and catch of the day was more than enough to make everyone on board feel at home.

We ate and the train made its way to Belfast. We crossed into Northern Ireland. I marveled at the giant cranes and machinery around the port. The stunning architecture of the Titanic Belfast was a reminder of the rich and complex history of the city.

As guests of the Grand Hibernian, doors were opened. Over the next two days, our little group traveled through the country, experiencing the essence of Ireland. In Belfast, we enjoyed a private, after hours visit to Hillsborough Castle, the residence of Her Majesty The Queen when visiting Northern Ireland. Canapes and cocktails were served in Her Majesty’s private drawing room, where personal family photos decorated shelves and tables. We explored Medieval villages with PhDs and former Viking settlements, stopping between sights to sample local brews and historic pubs and distilleries.

Evenings on the train were glamorous to-dos that began with cocktails and conversation. Wine and thoughtfully prepared meals ensured guests sampled the freshest flavors of Irish cuisine.

After dessert, coffee, conversation, and cocktails back to the Observation Car, where each night of our trip local entertainment would magically appear. Nights on the Grand Hibernian ended in some very off-key singing by fellow passengers and lots of laughter.

Train travel feels special, particularly when the level of service, attention to detail, and strong sense of heritage create a sense of “Downton Abbey” on rails. The result is enriching on a number of levels. While on board, the cadence of the day is leisurely, predictable, and comforting. And in just a few days, guests become good friends. One gentleman remarked how extraordinary it was to have had "at least one meaningful conversation with each person on board.”

At the heart of Irish culture is a warmth and congeniality that is so genuine you feel at home and ease immediately. The Grand Hibernian and the team that brings the train alive capture this spirit and leave guests with a strong sense of time, place, and connection to the culture.

Getting to the Emerald Isle is a short overnight hop from most East Coast hubs. The Grand Hibernian offers 2, 4, and 6 night journeys departing from Dublin Euston Station. Trips can be extended to include exclusive golf experiences, private touring, and heritage experiences.
